MoMI's "Recording the Ride" Opening Photos
9/08/2024
Nerds and notable figures from skate-video history convened in Queens for opening night of Recording the Ride—a ‘90s video retrospective at the Museum of the Moving Image. Co-curated by Jacob Rosenberg and Michaela Ternasky-Holland, the exhibition catalogs the rise of streetstyle vids from The Bones Brigade Video Show to Photosynthesis. The Secret Tape's Brendan Spohn loaned his treasured tapes to add to the occasion. Plus, we got to watch a one-night-only special screening of Virtual Reality accompanied by a panel with Mike Ternasky's family and friends. Catch all the big hitters that came out to see the show. —Ted Schmitz
Took the scenic route walkin' up with Matt Schleyer and Tristen Rowean. DM them for the pin
Must be the place. Wonder who's all here...
Helluva first sighting. New York's own Gino and Noelle
This ain't the only Video Freak in the museum tonight. So let's see some of 'em
Attendance was mandatory for all podcasters, writers and podcaster/writers. Just ask Adam, Lucas and Jason
Cutty spots and skateboard history, that's what Puleo does
Between building parks and gettin' kids on board, Steve Rodriguez stopped by
Midwestern editors and filmers? We got 'em! Zach Moore and Pete Spooner are two of the best
You can thank this guy for the insane collection we're about to see. Hit up The Secret Tape to get your own artifacts
My guys made it in! Tristen, Matt and Cole G
Andrew knew about this shit early. Of course he came through
Before I can fan out on everyone here, let's just go into the theater
You're not gonna post obscure facts about the video are you, Andrew?
VIPs fillin' the front row early
And some VIPs were still on the way
There he is! Tonight's main man Jacob Rosenberg with Josh Friedberg of *reads shirt* 411VM!
Thank you for your service, dog
Hell yeah, Jacob knows industry insiders and visionary directors like Seb and Colin
The museum would like to thank New Balance Numeric for supporting this event, and for a new Jamie Foy part sometime this year
Now, it's showtime!
Still hits
Sold-out crowd
Revolutionary editing, even by today's standards!
"I fuckin' asked Danny Way, what's up with the 540? He told me, and I'll tell you the key to it, is to alley-oop it" —John Cardiel
Here's a picture of a mind being blown in real-time
Damn, they got the license for The Beatles?! Wonder if Jake would let us in on the secret
After the screening, it was panel time. But as if Rick Howard, Jacob Rosenberg and MT's daughter Michaela Ternasky-Holland weren't heavy enough already...
...we also got Hensley!
There were exciting stories
And tear-jerking ones too
Wouldn't be here without him
Sorry to interrupt, fellas. Y'all look familiar
Out in the hall, multiple generations of Video Freaks gathered
East Coast men of the lens RB Umali and Bill Strobeck bring up the next gen
Massachusetts' finest! Brian Reid and Jahmal Williams
No food, drink or new mags allowed in the gallery. I kid! Congrats on Plank issue one, Max and Ian
Elkin and Hunt. Sounds like dudes you might meet at Bass Pro Shop, but they're actually usually by the screens
Jahmal's in the videos; Andrew overthinks them
Local ripper Faheem Allah came with good company
If you think you can show up with purple hair, match your date's top and NOT make the blog, you are sadly mistaken
Alright, let's check this show
First, a stop at the exhibition title wall with the curators and company
Now, we do the required reading
One time I asked Giorgio if Astoria was in New York City. He just looked at me like this
Thought we could talk vids and not have somethin' from TBBVS?
Many of the most pivotal vids were playing on loop
You can probably find a 4K video of the event somewhere, but please, just keep scrolling through the photos. I'll make more jokes than this guy
For the same price as a latté in Manhattan! See, an inflation joke?!
They really went above and beyond here
Forever
Yep, in the original orange
Arizona's baddest, Brad and Tyler moved to New York for nights like tonight
Lensmen and talent alike were hyped
Shut up about VX vs HPX. We're going back to Hi-8!
The holy of holies
This is the kinda stuff where you say, "That should be in a museum." Here we are, 2024
Hope you don't mind us gawking at all your cool shit
Recording Recording the Ride. Hella meta
I missed a shot of Stewart with the Static alum, but this'll do!
Lots to think about
Xerox for pin
That orange Photo tape was an absolute banger
A literal piece of my heart
I could've cataloged everything on this card for you
But I know seeing this Misfits shirt will get Iron Maiden stuck in your head, and I think that's funny
Who knows what any of this shit does
I was more of a Beer Trilogy guy!
Heavier than gold
Can't help but think someone was orchestrating a heist. Call it Ocean Howell's 11 or something
When YouTube crashes, you know the plug
Same as it ever was
Mostly streetstyle
The essential Crail collection
Focus
Can't say the rates have changed that much. Another inflation joke, but sad!
Bobby holds court with Rick
The mag pays respect
Sorry, last photo, Bill!
Cole Gino-dano
What, you never seen SK8HERS?! It's actually pretty significant. Track down a copy to up your ally game
How many Canadians in this pic? Jeremy knows!
Better not see this one on eBay
One more with the co-curators in front of the load-bearing Plan B wall. I'll hold for applause
It's about time to break out, so let's leave with a proud-parent moment. Michaela and her mom Mary Holland with MT close by
Seriously, it's an exceptional show. There's something cool in every case and all of it speaks to the heart of a skater. You gotta get down there
If Jahmal says it's time to leave, it's time to fuckin' leave
Thought this was a weed thing on the way out. Maybe it was
Like all great nights, it was over too soon. Always hate saying goodbye to Astoria, New York's best neighborhood. We'll be back though, and hope to see you there. Book your visit to see the show before it's gone
