Behind-the-Scenes of Riley Hawk’s Lakai x Baker Commercial

After seeing Tony’s commercial for his Lakai Proto shoe, Riley knew he had to get his dad’s back and make something special for his own Lakai X Baker colorway. He was going with a colorful shoe, so what better way to do it than get the team together for an ’80s-inspired backyard pool and ditch session? Add Slash, Manchild, Rick Howard and T-Hawk into the mix and you’re sure to get some gold. The commercial starts with the boys combing the block with their eyes peeled for a perfect backyard pool to skate. Once the session starts getting heavy, the homeowner (as played by Tony) takes notice and gives them the boot (and gets in a quick one for himself). The boys then relocated to a nearby ditch to end the day. With a squad this good, it’s hard to not come up with something that hits home. —Alex Papke

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 4 750pxThe world needs a Mustache Rick comeback. Let’s make that happen

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 5 750pxRiley, checking the coping. Not sure if that graffiti is historically accurate…

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 6 750pxSlash came correct with the colors. Never a stranger to the ol’ wig

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 8 750pxRiley agreed—there’s no such thing as too short

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 9 750pxRiley had a homie with a perfect van for the project

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 10 750pxRick and Manch were loving it in the back

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 11 750pxNo matter the time period, mall grabbing is a no-no, Slash

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 12 750pxAnd the search begins. (How perfect is that van?!)

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 13 750pxWait a second…

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 14 750pxThis might be the one, boys

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 15 750pxThe verdict is in

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 16 750pxIt’s a go!

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 17 750pxFirst things first

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 18 750pxGotta get the gang over the light

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 19 750pxAnd then things started to heat up. Riley firing it off backside

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 20 750pxManch knew he had to get his back

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 21 750pxAnd did so with a proper FSA in the deep. His first frontside booster in a backyard pool, for the record

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 22 750pxAfter eating our spliff crumbs and lapping up the spilled beer, the dog naturally moved onto Slash

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 23 750pxForever man’s best friend

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 24 750pxAll those dog kisses gave Slash the power to get this front feeble

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 25 750pxSlightly more ’70s than ‘80s, but the sweatband always makes a good costume accent

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 26 750pxIt for sure kept Riley’s hair out of his face long enough for him to get this nosegrind yank over the light. Peep the colorway, yo!

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 27 750pxSlash couldn’t get enough—coming back for seconds with the pivot fakie

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 28 750pxWho runs the ‘stache the best?

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 29 750pxThe Birdman popped in to get Slash’s back

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 30 750pxNeedless to say, the homies were fucking hyped

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 31 750pxQuick wardrobe change only to find out Tony was a little rusty on how to tie a tie

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 32 750pxTM Steves to the rescue one more time—a little over and a little under…

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 33 750pxAnd boom! That’s how it’s done. What would we do without you, Steves?

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 34 750pxThe dog was loving Tony’s ’80s homeowner vibe

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 35 750pxThe man, the myth, the legend—can’t make a commercial without the cameraman. Thanks again, Paco

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 36 750pxThe concept was to have the boys skating a backyard pool only to get kicked out by the homeowner who was casually sitting inside reading a newspaper. Tony couldn’t have pulled it off any better. All those acting gigs over the years are totally paying off

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 37 750pxWhen they were getting the boot, someone left their board behind…

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 38 750pxNo doubt Tony took it for a quick rip. Fully-suited invert in a backyard pool? Not a problem for the Birdman!

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 39 750pxA quick relocation for day two. What would usually be a one-hour drive to Encinitas turned into a four-hour trek after a truck full of kegs flipped on the 5, setting traffic back for days

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 40 750pxIf a turned-over 18-wheeler wasn’t gonna stop us, a little water in the ditch was definitely not gonna halt the production

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 41 750pxManch and Riley were all smiles but Slash had seen better days

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 42 750pxWhat? People were still doing Bertslides in the ‘80s. Rick’s face says it all

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 43 750pxWhen it doubt, tweak it out. Take notes on the toes, kids.

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 44 750pxNo better way to end the day than a smooth doubles routine. Although it was close, no fingers got run over in the process

Lakai Hawk ShoeBlog photoPAPKE 45 750pxAnd that’s a wrap! Thanks for the fun couple of days, Lakai. Grab a headband, a wig and a pair of Riley’s new shoe to get your own '80s vibe going. Okay, maybe you can skip the headband and the wig, but you get the idea
